As team flying squirrel, Philip Keller and I at the very outset challenged established gospel truths and decided to start from scratch without referencing previous designs. We made an early commitment to having 4 wheels instead of 3 (that have been the norm for the past few years) - this would give us the stability we would need at high speeds. The power produced by the rubber band is quite high, but useless if it cannot be transferred to the ground with very little loss. Traction was identified as one of the key criteria to make a winning car. Hence the use of wider tires.

Also, early on, we committed to making Minimum Functional Prototypes – making a prototype as soon as a theory was developed with the least effort to demonstrate it. In this effort, we went through 7 fully functional cars, with the 7th being the one that we raced on the final day. Using materials easily available and easiest to work with, we settled on plywood, brass tubes as materials for the frame and zip-ties and string for fastening them together. No traditional bonding agents were used allowing us a turnaround time of about 90 mins from fully disassembled to fully assembled.

Key Innovations:
Four wheel wide stance
Single tube direct drive.
One-way bearings as rear differential.
No traditional bonding agent (only tensioned string and zip-ties).
Tires as suspension.

The flying squirrel won the figure 8 circuit setting a new course record and came in second overall. Our team was awarded the most experimental for our process of rapid iteration.

A collaborative team project to solve for a problem identified during a trip to Kerala, India. Team members consisted design, engineering and business.

Problem:
There are many small-scale fertilizer mixing plants in Kerala, India that use manual labor to blend fertilizer raw materials together into a mix that is bagged and sold. Workers shovel the fertilizer in piles, filling the air with suspended fertilizer dust and creating an extremely unhealthy environment.

Observations on trip to India:
From the owner’s perspective, his main concerns were
1. Tools corrode very quickly, and we have to keep replacing them - this costs money.
2. There is a market demand that I am not able to satisfy with the current process
3. How do I scale?

From the workers’ perspective, their main concerns were
1. Manually intensive process, they get tired quickly from all the carrying bags and shoveling
2. Health issues - skin allergies and respiratory problems - because of all the particles that they breathe in (their mixing process is completely exposed, and all the shoveling drives a lot of particulates into the air)
3. They are worried about losing their jobs to machines that will replace them.

Design Iterations:
Based on the economic, social and cultural considerations, the team came up with several different methods for mixing raw fertilizer. We prototyped some of the methods and the results are shown in the video below.

The final design used the potential energy of the raw fertilizer components when raised to a height due to gravity. The method involved allowing the raw materials to slide along angled platforms that converged to mix the materials. Several stages were used as can be seen in the proof of concept prototype.

The team is currently working on implementing this full scale on location at the factory in Kerala, India.

Problem:
In looking to the future of public radio, KPCC needed to bridge the ever-widening gap between their aging loyal donor base and the next generation of listers. Compounded by the shift from terrestrial to digital media consumption, KPCC was in search of ways to broaden and strengthen its brand reach and equity without diluting the mission of being a trusted local news source in Southern California.

Solution:
KPCC+ is a systematic, multi-pronged growth strategy intended to increase listenership and maintain a longterm competitive advantage.

1. Klik - digital application allowing the user to participate in a realtime conversation with other listeners that share their interests.

2. Voices - recording device disseminated into the listening area to capture local stories and opinions. It gets passed from person to person like chain mail.

3. Nights of the Round Table - multi-venue curated conversation around local issues hosted by KPCC, encouraging local listeners to connect and share their opinions in person.

4. Change Agency - mobilizes and connects the listening community with opportunities for community service.

5. Conservatory - social incubator / think tank that leverages the affluence and ideas of the listening community for creating positive change.

Benefit to the user:
One of the biggest insights from research with listeners was that they felt connected to the radio station and their hosts, but not to other listeners who share their values. KPCC+ connects listeners both in person and over the air. With the Change Agency, Nights of the Round Table and the Conservatory, listeners meet like-minded others, share ideas and together create something of value for the local community through projects. Klik and Voices are platforms to share opinions and thoughts.

Benefit to the client:
1. Makes KPCC synonymous with positive change in local communities. Creates brand equity by increasing listener touch points.
2. Creates content for on-air programming through projects that have positive impact in the community as well as individual stories that may emerge through Voices.
3. Motivates listeners to become contributing members as they are able to see change in their communities.
4. Gains access to Millenials who identify themselves as being activists and change agents.

Benefit to the society:
Uplifts and creates closely-knit local neighborhoods through KPCC+ projects.

This is a project done for a client in the displays business. We were asked to look at some of the ways in which displays could change our lives in the future.

Key Insight:
Language is a tool that we use to communicate ideas and emotions. By its definition, it is limited.

Opportunity:
What if we were able to transmit ideas directly from person to person without the need for language as a barrier. This may sound far fetched, but it may come sooner than you think.

Trends:
Devices such as the Epoc are coming out. They can learn brainwave patterns and perform tasks based on them.

The increasing proliferation of augmented reality. Increasingly, people are looking at augmented reality as a tool for interaction and lesser as a tool for just displaying information.

Cloud storage is already here and cloud computing may become an alternative to carrying CPUs around. The future could be in cloud sensing. You wouldn't have to carry all these sensors around, but the infrastructure in the environment would enable you to interact more easily.

Materials get worse with age. Due to wear and tear they deteriorate aesthetically and functionally. What if materials would get better with age? What would they look like and how would it affect how we interact with them?

Key Insight:
I was interested in finding out the relationship between emotional attachment/sentimental value and the attributes of a product. This study from the industrial design department at TU Delft linked emotional attachment to memory and enjoyment.

Designed For Wear Paradigm:
Increase feelings of enjoyment and positive memories while using a product by designing wear into its materials. Some examples are shown alongside.

Positioning:
Better Age is positioned as an organization with a core competency of developing materials that get better with age. They will serve to demonstrate the capability of various materials using the Designed For Wear paradigm.

Strategy:
The strategy for launch is three pronged. The rollout would also be in this order.

1. BetterAge would demonstrate the DFW paradigm by creating halo products that take full advantage of the new properties that the material demonstrates. Some examples of products would be Paving tiles, the Lifecube and Walldraw.

2. BetterAge would license its materials to manufacturers making highly visible products. The 111 chair from emeco using DFW is an example. This would be the marketing strategy for getting the word out there. License to well designed highly visible products that can take advantage of DFW.

3. DFW offers a huge advantage from a product lifecycle perspective. Products will last longer because they will continue to change over time hence reducing the amount people need to throw out. This will become a point of differentiation for products in shelves and BetterAge can license product tags to make this explicit and visible.

Products
1. Lifecube: The lifecube is a device that starts out as a soft cube gifted to children by their parents at a young age. It has the capabilities of recording audio and take still photographs. It records sounds and takes photographs of the child at random intervals while he/she in interacting with it. It wears down over time as the child grows up and replays memories randomly.

2. Pavements in parks can be an interesting implementation of a stone version of this material. This could indicate which paths are most used and would create a visual interest in the park as a result.

3. Wearwall - Children draw on walls no matter how much they are scolded! Applying this material to walls would make it easy to maintain and provide another dimension of color and possibility for kids to draw on walls with wear built into them.

4. Soles - Performace footwear for athletes can have soles that wear out after a given mileage. This allows the wearer to be aware on when the shoe or the sole needs to be replaced to maintain optimum performance</description>

Credo is a tool to measure compatibility between people. It serves also to give an indication of the reputation of the person.

The premise of the idea comes from the increasing need to vet people we meet nowadays. More and more, we are meeting people through email, social media and less face to face. Credo is a way to ensure that people who you would be interacting or transacting with in any way are credible. Think of it as ebay seller ratings for your everyday relationships.

People share a lot of information on the internet. From their interest, activities, beliefs and aspirations are shared on social networks like Facebook and Twitter. Business relationships, achievements and professional networks are shared on Linkedin. Creado will (with permission) parse this information and based on a proprietary algorithm come up with a score. Of course this will not be an absolute score, it will always be relative between two people.

In the example shown alongside, Credo is used as a plugin for SHAIR - a private flying service to vet people who would be possibly flying with you on a private jet in order to ensure the best experience for all.
